“When I was a little girl and got my library card, that was the best thing that happened to me,” statesSweedler Now she remains in a book group, and not the kind where members mostly consume white wine and chatter: “We read stories and discuss them.” She’s drawn to Black authors in specific due to the fact that they expose her to various experiences and perspectives.

Increasingly, researchers discover, isolation can eliminate. But “if you love to read, you’ll never be lonely,” statesSweedler “Every book is your friend.”

4. Eat reasonably

She gets wistful thinking of what might have been: “I didn’t have a lot of schooling, but the schooling I had, I enjoyed.” She would have liked a more difficult, top-level profession.

But she does not harp on remorses: “I happen to be very fortunate.”

Her personality assists. Fundamentally, she’s a joyful individual, an optimist. “Not all people appreciate what’s in their life — they take it for granted. I’m not like that. I like to analyze situations, and I feel like I’ve been blessed.”

Sweedler has actually had more than her reasonable share of sorrow: Both her children passed away reasonably young. Still, why invest your time feeling bitter or residence on remorses?

As a kid, she was applauded for her excellent mindset. “When I walked into a classroom, my teacher would say, ‘Good morning, sunshine!’ Because I was so cheerful.”

Now she’s 103, which hasn’t altered. “I’m interested in everything, and I’m in the here and now,” statesSweedler “I don’t look back; I look forward.”
