The last Airbus A380, the biggest airliner worldwide, will be provided in 2021.

Airbus decided to end production after Emirates — its primary consumer for the double-decker airplane — cut its A380 orders and chose the smaller sized A330-900 and A350-900 rather, the European business revealed Thursday.

“Today’s announcement is painful for us and the A380 communities worldwide,” Airbus CEO Tom Enders stated in a release. “But, keep in mind that A380s will still roam the skies for many years to come and Airbus will of course continue to fully support the A380 operators.”

Airbus kept in mind that 3,000 to 3,500 tasks might be affected by its choice, so it’ll be speaking with unions in the coming weeks and wishes to provide numerous “internal mobility opportunities” — moving individuals to other functions within the business.

Emirates stated a different release it was “disappointed” that it needed to lower its A380 order, however CEO Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum guaranteed that the airliner will stay among the fleet’s pillars “well into the 2030s.”

We got a tip that this was coming in January 2018, when Airbus primary salesperson John Leahy stated the business required a specific variety of Emirates orders for the A380 program to stay practical.
