CHELSEA fans can look forward to the prospect of Alvaro Morata bringing his goalscoring habit to the Premier League in 2017-18.
The Spanish forward, 24, played a bit-part role at Zinedine Zidane’s Real Madrid, but one thing was also for sure…
Morata scores goals.
The former Juventus forward scored a league goal per 89 minutes in 2016-17, clearly one big reason Antonio Conte was keen to add him to the squad.
Particularly as Diego Costa looks all but certain to return to Atletico Madrid this summer.
On the £65million signing, Chelsea boss Conte said: “This is a good signing for us.
“Morata is a young player but has a lot of experience and played in the past with Real Madrid, Juventus and Real Madrid again.
But how well do you really know Morata? Check out ten things you may not have known, below…
1. MODEL FAMILY
NOW let’s be honest here, Morata’s a good-looking chap… but clearly it runs in the family.
Not only is new-wife Alice Campello a famous model, but his sister Marta Abril Morata Martin is ALSO a model.
Campello is hugely famous and boasts over one million Instagram followers, while Marta can still proudly claim to have 66,000 social media fans.
2. SUPER SUPER-SUB
AS already mentioned, Morata was confined mostly to a role off the bench in Madrid.
However, in December last year the Spaniard made a little piece of footballing history in the Club World Cup final.
Morata became the first-ever “fourth” substitution as Real took advantage of a new rule being trialled to use an additional sub in extra-time.
He replaced Cristiano Ronaldo in the 112th-minute of the 4-2 win over Japanese side Kashima Antlers.
3. ONE REAL LOVE
MORATA absolutely loves Real Madrid.
In truth, if Zidane had offered him regular first-team football, it’s all but certain he wouldn’t have left.
Nothing epitomised that fact more than the time Morata netted against Real for Juventus in the Champions League semi-final in 2015.
He failed to celebrate and if anything looked glum as his penalty knocked the Spanish side out of Europe.
4. PLAYING FOR KEEPS
IF ever Conte finds himself in the midst of a goalkeeping injury crisis, just stick Morata between the uprights.
The Spanish striker is pretty handy with a pair of gloves on it turns out.
In October 2016, Morata stunned his Spain teammates by unfurling stunning save after stunning save from some well-struck free-kicks.
Is he automatically Chelsea’s No2 goalkeeper ahead of Willy Caballero at this point?
5. GET STUCK IN
MORATA clearly has a funny side, as he showed when Real Madrid won the La Liga title last season.
To “celebrate”, Morata – while walking through an airport – steamed towards a club official and completely wiped him out with a slide tackle.
As you do…
6. THE SHY GUY
THAT said, he can be quite a shy character at times too.
At a public reception held to celebrate Madrid’s league title Cristiano Ronaldo got the crowd on their feet with a rousing speech.
On completion Ron went to hand the microphone to Morata… who ran off and hid behind a flagpole rather than indulge in some public speaking.
7. BROMANCE I: SERG OF FEELINGS
ARE you even a professional footballer these days if you don’t form an incredible bromance with a teammate?
Well, Morata certainly has one true bromance, with Real Madrid ace Sergio Ramos.
The pair regularly documented their crazy friendship, from Morata getting Ramos to cut his hair, to showing off his backside and indulging in a little wrestling at training.
You know they’ll miss each other this season.
8. BROMANCE II: PAUL FOR YOU
NOT one, but two bromances for Morata, who has a bit of a thing with Manchester United midfielder Paul Pogba.
The pair played together at Juventus and formed a very close friendship in Italy.
While Pogba has grown close with new teammate Romelu Lukaku, hopefully he’ll still have time for Morata now they’re back in the same country again.
9. REAL NICE GUY
FOOTBALLERS these days regularly attempt to lift sick fans’ spirits with hospital visits.
Many pose for selfies and sign shirts, but Morata went one step further in March 2014.
After a hospital visit hit him hard, in a beautiful act of solidarity for a youngster suffering from cancer, he shaved his head.
Morata went on to score in a 4-0 win over Rayo Vallecano in the next game and pay tribute to the child.
10. AIN’T ABOUT THE MONEY
THESE days it seems to be all about the money for many footballers, with stars such as Oscar and Carlos Tevez cashing-in on massive pay-days out in the Chinese Super League.
But not for Morata, who famously snubbed a £147m offer that would have earned him nearly £30m over five years.
He said now and look where it’s got him? A massive move to the champions of England…
