The union that represents American Airlines’ pilots took legal action against the provider in federal court Thursday to obstruct a program that motivates pilots to aid with simulator training, an effort the provider introduced as it races to include personnel and fulfill strong travel need.
The Fort Worth, Texas- based airline company asked line pilots to come into among American’s training centers on their day of rests to take part in pilots’ simulator sessions, which is generally dealt with by specifically trained check pilots. A check airman would still perform the examination.
“As demand continues to grow and we continue to hire, we need to expand our pilot-training capabilities to a historically unprecedented level,” stated Lyle Hogg, vice president of flight operations training, in a note to pilots.
But the Allied Pilots Association argued in its match, submitted in U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Texas, that the training sessions would make up a modification in work guidelines, which would need settlement with the union.
“Management right now is making up rules as they go along,” stated Dennis Tajer, representative for the union, which represents some 14,000 American Airlines pilots. “They’re in a crisis to get pilots through training. They’re underwater trying to get as many pilots through as possible.”
The suit comes as American and other providers are rushing to work with as lots of pilots as possible as guests return in droves.
Correction: American Airlines pilots were asked to take part in simulator sessions on their day of rests. A previous variation of this story mischaracterized the pilots’ function in the trainings.
