Bethanie Mattek-Sands confirms she has ruptured her patella tendon and will require surgery
BETHANIE MATTEK-SANDS says husband Justin begged her not to look at her leg after her horrific fall at Wimbledon.
But it was too late as the American replied: “F*** you, I already did!”
Speaking to fans on Facebook Live, the Wimbledon star confirmed she hasn’t watched the clip back, saying: “I hate watching sports injuries let alone one of my own.”
She added: “All I remember is hearing this pop in my leg.
“This loud pop, someone told me afterwards I got hit by a ball. My leg went from under me and I went down.
“I took a look at my knee and something was wrong. Just for a second I thought I could adjust it, but then I knew it was either dislocated or broken.
“That’s when you heard me drop the F-bomb, but it was that painful – the worst injury I have had in my career.”
She added: “I was out there for a while, it felt like an eternity.
“I just remember everyone getting ready to straighten my leg. I told Justin, if anyone straightens my leg I will kill you.
“I was in pain, I thought they were going to try to adjust my leg.
“I made them promise me they were not going to straighten my leg. I know I gave the medics a hard time because the painkillers hadn’t kicked in.
“I went to the hospital, I don’t remember them straightening my leg. I just remember waking up and my leg was straight.”
The tennis player confirmed that she had dislocated her patella tendon and that was what left her writhing in agony on court.
Mattek-Sands will fly back to New York today and informed fans that she will be needing surgery, which will leave her out for a while.
