Mandarin Princess won in shock result in two-year-old 1.40 at Yarmouth, which turned out to be stablemate Millie’s Kiss aged three
A BETTING scandal has erupted after a 50-1 shot that romped to victory turned out to be a different horse entered into the race by mistake.
Mandarin Princess won in a shock result in the two-year-old 1.40 at Yarmouth this afternoon – beating the heavily-backed favourite.
But in a bizarre turn of events, the victorious nag actually turned out to be its stablemate Millie’s Kiss, a three-year-old due to run in the 3.15.
Incredibly, the result will stand, leaving punters out of pocket, because the horse weighed in after the race, making it official.
Fyre Cay, the 4/6 favourite of the race, came second, while Take Shelter at 11/4 was a close third.
Yarmouth steward Tony McGlone said: “The horse was sent for a routine check after the race.
“The veterinary officer scanned the horse and found it to be the incorrect horse.
Millie’s Kiss was made a non-runner after the shock result emerged as he had already raced.
Trainer Philip McBride was said to be in a rush before the race, causing the mix-up.
An immediate investigation has been launched into the incident, which has cost gamblers thousands-of-pounds.
SkyBet spokesman Michael Shinners said: “This is a bizarre, virtually unprecedented incident and punters who backed the second have every right to feel hard done by.
“We feel they deserve to be paid out, so that’s what we’re doing.
“However, anyone backing the ‘winner’ did so in good faith, too, so they’ll also be paid out.”
Hundreds of furious punters took to Twitter demanding their money back from bookmakers.
