Bose on Wednesday stated it’s closing 119 shop areas throughout North America, Europe, Australia and Japan in the coming months. The audio devices business states the relocation is because of “the dramatic shift to online shopping.”

Bose’s very first United States shop opened in 1993. The business now states its items are significantly being bought online.

“Originally, our retail stores gave people a way to experience, test, and talk to us about multi-component, CD and DVD-based home entertainment systems,” Colette Burke, Bose’s vice president of worldwide sales, stated in a declaration. “At the time, it was a radical idea, but we focused on what our customers needed, and where they needed it — and we’re doing the same thing now.”

The closings undoubtedly suggest layoffs, with Burke including that “the decision impacts some of our amazing store teams.” Those staff members will be provided outplacement help and severance, though the business isn’t sharing the number of individuals will be impacted.

Around 130 Bose shops will stay open in locations consisting of China and the United Arab Emirates, in addition to other shops in India, Southeast Asia and South Korea.
