COLIN TIZZARD was all smiles for tremendous Cooper after Fox Norton made a successful return within the Shloer Chase at Cheltenham.

Final yr’s Champion Chase runner-up jumped neatly beneath Bryan Cooper and coasted dwelling for an eight-length victory within the colors of proprietor Alan Potts, who died final week.

Potts had signed up the Cooper to trip all his horses in Britain this season. He ended a lean spell on Friday with victory on prime novice chaser Finian’s Oscar and bagged one other massive pot on Four-5 favorite Fox Norton.

Tizzard stated: “I’m satisfied for Bryan. He’s been beneath stress.

“Alan determined he was going to trip all of the horses in England and I went together with it however, if I’d had my alternative, it may not have been.

“He was sensible on this one – nobody might have ridden him any higher.”

Sun Bets cut Fox Norton to 6-1 from 10s for the Champion Chase at Cheltenham in March. And that seems to be the way Tizzard is leaning despite a temptation to go up in trip.

He is now likely to head to the Tingle Creek at Sandown next month.

Tizzard added: “It was always Alan Potts’ wish that we kept this horse away from his Gold Cup winner Sizing John.

“For me he is a bigger, heavier horse this year. There’s no need to change from two miles – although if you ask me tomorrow morning that might change.”

Alan King must have come close to losing his marbles after a wretched run of bad luck in recent weeks.

So it was only apt that Elgin would reverse his fortunes in the Unibet Greatwood Hurdle to the delight of the 10,000 members of owners Elite Racing.

After winning jockey Wayne Hutchinson made a dash to the stands’ rail looking for the best ground he went head-to-head with fifth-placed stablemate William H Bonney and Misterton up the final climb.

Elgin nosed ahead after jumping the last and held Misterton by a hard-fought neck.

King smiled: “It was back to the old days. When the ground was bad Choc Thornton would never give the outside to anyone.

“He won well at Ascot last time but I was worried about the ground – it’s hard work out there. I’d imagine he’ll go back to Ascot just before Christmas.

“He did very well through the summer and he’s moving better now. He’s progressive.

“William H Bonney travelled really well – probably better than the winner.

“He’ll come on for the run and there’s a big one in him. He might go to Ascot as well and he could win a Betfair Hurdle.”
