Christian Pulisic became Borussia Dortmund’s youngest Champions League scorer recently

The attacking midfielder was born in Hershey, Pennsylvania – so called the Sweetest Place on Earth because Hershey’s chocolate is produced there.

And he netted BVB’s second as Thomas Tuchel’s side overturned a 1-0 deficit from the first leg to progress to the quarter-finals.

The American international, 18, had already assisted Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang’s opener when he collected Łukasz Piszczek’s perfectly-weighted through ball, deftly clipping past onrushing Benfica keeper Ederson Moraes to become Dortmund’s youngest Champions League scorer.

It has been a breakout season for the attacking midfielder who has already taken the Bundesliga by storm in little over 12 months.

Born to parents who had played college soccer for George Mason University, Pulisic’s father, Mark, played professionally indoors for the Harriburg Heat in the 1990s.

Football talent runs further in the family with his cousin, Will, playing as a goalkeeper for BVB’s Under-19 side.

Pulisic moved to Germany as a 16-year-old in February 2015 and immediately made a big impression in BVB’s youth ranks, scoring 10 and assisting eight in just 15 games.

That form saw him promoted into Thomas Tuchel’s first-team squad during the 2015-16 winter break and handed his first-team debut against Ingolstadt at the end of January 2016.

He opened his scoring account against Hamburg at 17 years and 212 days, making him the youngest non-German to score in the Bundesliga and the fourth youngest scorer ever.

Pulisic followed that by netting against Stuttgart, making him the youngest player to score two Bundesliga goals. At the same time he was making waves at home with US men’s national team.

Handed his debut against Guatemala by Jurgen Klinsmann at the end of March, Pulisic became the youngest player to feature in a World Cup qualifier.

Two months later he netted his first goal for his country in a friendly win over Bolivia to become the USA’s youngest scorer.

It was clear Dortmund had a precocious talent on their hands and Pulisic finished the campaign with two goals from nine Bundesliga outings.

Mostly deployed on the right-hand side of midfield, Pulisic is comfortable playing on the left or behind the main striker as a number 10 and his long-term position in the USA team is already source of debate.

He has been eased into first-team action by Tuchel this term with half of his 20 Bundesliga appearances coming from the bench, something which makes his assist rate all the more impressive.

Pulisic has set up three goals for his team-mates this season – in contrast to the ten supplied by league-leader Thomas Muller – yet ranks fifth in the league for assists per 90 minutes (0.43).

Bayern Munich pair Muller and Arjen Robben are two of those ahead of ahead of the American on that leader board, giving an indication of the company he is keeping.

He has attempted 62 dribbles this term, the sixth most in the league, which works out at 5.14 per game – second only to another of Dortmund’s outrageous young talents in Ousmane Dembele.

One area where Pulisic does not thrive is crossing. He has attempted 115 deliveries this season at an average of 3.5 every 90 minutes but that, quite simply, is not what his game is about.

Owing to his low centre of gravity, standing at just 5ft 8ins, he has pace to burn, great close control and dribbling ability which allows him to ghost past defenders and get Dortmund up the field quickly on the counter-attack.

Pulisic also win fouls from panicked defenders who take the view it is better to stop him before he gets too close to their penalty area.

With Dortmund 16 points off the pace in the Bundesliga they won’t break Bayern’s stranglehold this season.

However, with Pulisic, complemented by Dembele, Emre Mor, Julian Weigl and Alexander Isak – all aged 21 or under – the future is more than bright for BVB.
