Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer on Wednesday supported repeal of the 2002 U.S. authorization for warfare in Iraq and mentioned he deliberate to convey the measure to a vote this yr.
The New York Democrat’s announcement comes a day earlier than the House plans to vote on laws to scrap the Authorization for Use of Military Force. More lawmakers from each events have known as to revoke the decision almost 10 years after the Iraq War ended.
“The Iraq War has been over for nearly a decade. An authorization passed in 2002 is no longer necessary in 2021,” Schumer mentioned, stressing that the U.S. won’t “abandon our relationship with Iraq and its people.”

“Furthermore, the President is committed to working with the Congress to ensure that outdated authorizations for the use of military force are replaced with a narrow and specific framework appropriate to ensure that we can continue to protect Americans from terrorist threats,” the OMB continued.
The Senate Foreign Relations Committee plans to maneuver ahead with a bipartisan invoice to repeal the 2002 Iraq War authorization, together with a separate 1991 AUMF handed forward of the Gulf War, subsequent week. Sens. Tim Kaine, D-Va., and Todd Young, R-Ind., led the measure.
