Luckily he avoided skidmarks by doing so on a relatively flat part of the stage, rather than downhill.

Dumoulin was even wearing the Maglia Rosa, the famous pink leader’s jersey of the Giro d’Italia.

And unfortunately for him, the 26-year-old really had to pull the chain after getting back on his bike, after being left behind by rivals Nairo Quintana and Vincenzo Nibali.

He looked a little flushed as he had to catch up may have even cracked on the final climb, as his rivals smelt their chance to take advantage.

Dumoulin lost serious time to his rivals on the day, but managed to hang on to the pink jersey with five stages to go.

He then accused his rivals of dirty sportsmanship, not stopping for the leader’s jersey while he took a break.

Of course social media reacted with its usual dose of toilet humour.
