    But Matrosov no longer deals with a murder probe after detectives concluded Sviridov passed away by suicide.

    Matrosov was at first hung on suspicion of murder, a charge that touched off a wave of compassion and outrage from Russians who saw this as unreasonable.

    Vintai villagers began a petition for Matrosov to be acquitted and spared prison by the Ministry of Internal Affairs and the Investigative Committee.
