Londoner takes victory once again in his home marathon in he scorches the field in the final metres of the race
DAVID WEIR has won a record SEVENTH London Marathon wheelchair race after scorching his rivals in a thrilling sprint finish on The Mall.
The 37-year-old emerged from a pack of contenders and waltzed around his rival Marcel Hug in the final 200 metres to take victory.
Weir was part of a big pack of runners, but triumphed in 1hour 31min 6sec.
He was hailed by Baroness Tanni Grey-Thompson, who herself won the race six times.
She said: “Well done David Weir. I’m really proud of you.
“That finsih hasn’t been there for the last few years. Everyone wanted him to have a good race today.
“For him, as much as anyone else, that’s a top win today. He ran a devastating race.”
