U.S. President Donald Trump attacked New York Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand in a sexually suggestive tweet Tuesday morning stating that Gillibrand “would do something” for cash, prompting a swift backlash from Democrats who accused Trump of sexism and “slut shaming.”

“Light-weight Senator Kirsten Gillibrand, a complete flunky for Chuck Schumer and somebody who would come to my workplace “begging” for marketing campaign contributions not so way back (and would do something for them), is now within the ring preventing towards Trump. Very disloyal to Invoice & Crooked-USED!” Trump tweeted.

Gillibrand, who had referred to as for Trump’s resignation after three ladies urged Congress to analyze the president for sexual misconduct, stated Trump’s tweet was a “sexist smear” designed to intimidate her.

“It was a sexist smear trying to silence my voice,” stated Gillibrand, who’s seen as a possible Democratic presidential candidate in 2020. “I can’t be [silenced] on this challenge. Neither will the ladies who stood as much as the president yesterday and neither will the thousands and thousands of girls who’ve been marching because the ladies’s march to face as much as insurance policies they don’t agree with.”

“It’s a part of the president’s effort at identify calling and it’s not going to silence me,” she stated.

The backlash towards Trump’s tweet was quick.

Gretchen Carlson, a former Fox Information persona whose lawsuit towards Roger Ailes for sexual harassment led to Ailes’ resignation as chairman and CEO of Fox Information, defended Gillibrand in a sequence of tweets.

“What do u imply @SenGillibrand would ‘do something’ for marketing campaign contributions? By the best way she isn’t a light-weight,” she wrote.

“Sexual harassment is apolitical,” Carlson stated in a second tweet. “Ladies is not going to be silenced it doesn’t matter what occasion they’re in. Interval.”

Sen. Elizabeth Warren accused Trump of attempting to “bully, intimidate and slut-shame” Gillibrand.

And Rep. Eric Swalwell (D-Calif.) referred to as Trump’s tweet about Gillibrand “ugly and suggestive.”

Patti Solis Doyle, a one-time Hillary Clinton marketing campaign official, wrote that Trump’s tweet made a “vile, disgusting implication” about Gillibrand.

Trump didn’t provide any proof on his suggestion that Gillibrand had gone to him “begging” for marketing campaign donations “and would do something for them.” Trump has donated $eight,900 to Senate Minority Chief Charles E. Schumer and $5,850 to Gillibrand, based on Open Secrets and techniques, a non-profit that tracks marketing campaign contributions.

It was unclear who Trump is referring to because the record of people that’ve accused him of misconduct features a former enterprise companion, a reporter who interviewed him, a former contestant on his Apprentice TV present, and a Miss USA pageant contestant, amongst others.

White Home spokeswoman Sarah Sanders echoed Trump’s feedback throughout a press convention Monday.
