Alastair Cook and Co crowned County Champions for the first time in 25 years after beating Warwickshire at Edgbaston
ESSEX have won the County Championship for the first time in 25 years, after Somerset beat Lancashire on Friday.
Skipper Ryan ten Doeschate led the side to victory by an innings and 56 runs over Warwickshire at Edgbaston on Thursday to clinch the trophy in style.
However, Alastair Cook’s county were left sweating on the result between Somerset and Lancashire, needing a win for the Taunton side to be mathematically out of sight.
Crucial runs from veteran Marcus Trescothick and George Bartlett saw Somerset over the line too 69-3, winning by seven wickets.
Earlier in the week, Essex had gone about dismantling Warwickshire in brutal manner.
After skittling the Midlands county for 201 in their first-innings, Essex amassed 369-9 in reply – with Varun Chopra leading the way with 98.
A Simon Harmer-inspired Essex then ripped through Warwickshire once more, this time for paltry 112.
Yet the champagne was left on ice while they waited for Somerset to complete their game.

Within 90 minutes of the final day’s play in Taunton, it was over and Essex could truly celebrate in style.
Essex had not won the County Championship since 1992 – a feat made all the more incredible by the fact they were only promoted from Division Two last season.
They have thus far gone the full campaign unbeaten, winning eight and drawing just four of their four-day outings in 2017.
Nick Browne was Essex’s outstanding batsman this season, notching 816 runs so far, while Cook added 667 at a stunning average of 66.7.
Meanwhile, Jamie Porter and Harmer are the two leading wicket takers in the County Championship Division one, with 64 and 63 wickets respectively.
