Association of Ringside Physicians believes the Irish UFC star will be out of his depth against the American boxing legend

EXPERT BOXING doctors ‘truly fear’ for Conor McGregor’s health when he makes his professional boxing debut against Floyd Mayweather this Saturday.

The Association of Ringside Physicians, a group of over 100 specialist doctors, believe the Irish UFC star will be out of his depth against the American boxing legend.

Doctors fear McGregor could be seriously hurt in his first pro boxing bout

At 29, McGregor is 11 years younger than the undefeated five-division boxing world champion.

But Mayweather is regarded by most boxing experts as the best boxer of his generation and could have too many skills for the MMA star.

“We were very surprised this bout was even sanctioned and was going to be permitted to carry on,” said Larry Lovelace, a doctor and president of the Association of Ringside Physicians.

“The thing I really fear, truly fear, is that somebody’s going to get really hurt in this upcoming fight,” Lovelace told the New York Times.

The Association of Ringside Physicians was established in 1997 to ensure the health and safety of boxers and MMA fighters.

Its members, who have decades of experience working at major fights, believe McGregor has been mismatched against Mayweather, who has won all 49 of his fights.

The boxing world does not want to see another tragedy like the one that befell former UFC fighter Tim Hague in June.

The 34-year-old suffered a fatal brain injury during a bout against Adam Braidwood, which was Hague’s fourth pro boxing match after competing in 34 MMA fights.

The Nevada State Athletic Commission is responsible for sanctioning bouts and the New York Times said it was set to receive nearly £1million from the McGregor vs Mayweather fight.

However, the commission’s executive director Bob Bennett defended the decision to approve the blockbuster bout, which is set to generate more than £500million.

“If you look at him today versus Floyd Mayweather, Conor is the taller, longer, stronger, more powerful opponent, “ Bennett said.

“He’s also a southpaw, which makes it a little more difficult for a conventional fighter. He’s 12 years younger than Floyd.”

Highly respected retired referee Richard Steele was another dissenting voice.

“Here’s a guy from one sport, challenging the world’s best in his own sport — I really don’t know how it’s going to work,” Steele said.

“McGregor can’t kick. He can’t elbow. He can’t do nothing. Nothing that he’s used to doing that makes him a great MMA fighter.

“I would definitely have it in mind about protecting this kid. The safety of the fighter is always going to be there.

“But it might be a little bit more in this fight because this guy’s never been in a boxing ring before.”

Lovelace also criticised the decision by the Nevada State Athletic Commission to approve the use of 8oz gloves instead of 10oz gloves – which are usually used for any fight above welterweight.

The lighter gloves have less padding over the knuckles and are believed to favour the heavier puncher.

Both fighters asked for the lighter gloves and McGregor believes it is an advantage for him.

“I don’t think that’s the commission’s role, to try to affect the fight, or to try to affect ticket sales,” Lovelace said.

But Bennett hit back at claims finances were being put ahead of fighter safety, saying: “That’s totally unfair, and it’s simply not true.”
