Spaniard skipped the Monaco Grand Prix to race in the Indycar showpiece in America

FERNANDO ALONSO’s Indy 500 dream ended in familiar fashion after he suffered a blown engine.

The Spaniard, who was given permission to skip the Monaco GP to race in the Indycar showpiece, suffered heartbreak less than 20-laps from the end.

Alonso, whose Honda-powered F1 car has been plagued by reliability problems, was treated to a standing ovation from the grandstands.

Alonso said: “I heard the noise and felt the engine friction and I backed off.

“It is a shame,who knows where we could have been. It has been one of the best experiences of my career.”

Alonso earlier called in on Jenson Button’s team radio to wish him luck for the Monaco Grand Prix.

Button came out of his sabbatical to step into Alonso’s car in Monte Carlo as the Spaniard headed to America.

When Alonso told Button to look after his car, the Brit joked “I’m going to pee in your seat”.
