Dettori got the better of Ryan Moore at Chester in another tight contest as he got Western Hymn up in the final strides to land the Group 3 event on Friday

FRANKIE DETTORI and John Gosden teamed up for more big race success with Western Hymn in the Ormonde Stakes at Chester.

Ryan Moore sent US Army Ranger to the front in the straight and he looked to have the win in the bag.

But Dettori and Western Hymn were hot on his heels and got up on the line to win by a short head.

Duretto put up an admirable performance in third.

Dettori said: “He’s a very difficult horse. You can’t get there too early, I got there as late as I dared and he still stopped, but the line came in time for me.

“Ryan is a very hard to rival to beat and there’s always good satisfaction to do it.”

He added: “I’m pleased for the horse. He’s quirky, but he’s part of the furniture in the stable, we all love him and he deserves a race like this.

“I enjoy riding him because it’s a challenge. He’s got all the ability, but he knows the game inside out and you have to try and find the key to get him to go. Today I managed to find it.”

Is the QIPCO 2000 Guineas a good pointer towards a Derby winner?
