As any mother or father is aware of, it is nearly unimaginable to work, or examine, or go to advanced medical appointments with a two-year-old in tow. For asylum seekers with little monetary or household assist, it is infinitely harder.

But these fleeing Iraq, Myanmar or Afghanistan can’t entry a childcare subsidy whereas they’re on bridging visas, so they need to pay $100-plus a day. Most cannot afford it, so cannot work, or study English, or attend trauma counselling.

However in an Australian first, Canterbury Bankstown Council has voted to supply free childcare to asylum seekers in its council-run centres.

The year-long pilot program will provide one free place a day on the Punchbowl Kids’s Centre, Carrington Occasional Care and Lakemba Kids’s Centre. In NSW, Lakemba is residence to the biggest variety of individuals searching for asylum.

“It’s vitally necessary kids attend these early childhood providers to develop their expertise, together with studying English, and to provide them an excellent begin to reach life,” stated Mayor Khal Asfour, who developed the pilot with the Sydney Alliance and the Asylum Seekers Centre.
