Russian opponent had lost just once before taking on the Brit and he pushed Groves to the limit
HE’S finally done it.
After losing three world title fights, George Groves is now in boxing’s elite.
Tonight at Bramall Lane in Sheffield, the Hammersmith boxer claimed the WBA Super-Middleweight title with a stunning stoppage victory against Fedor Chudinov.

The fight lived up to everyone’s expectations.
From the first bell both boxers traded huge shots, with Chudinov dominating from the centre of the ring like a silent assassin.
Groves was often on the back foot. But his superior footwork and speed of counter-punching meant he was always in the fight.
Chudinov was hit by some huge shots in the first three rounds, but he he brushed them off with a steely determination that left many ringside wondering how he could ever be wobbled.
But wobbled he was, and in devastating fashion, in the sixth round.
Groves, who suffered a nasty cut to his left eye in round four, saw a small opening, a chink in the Russian warrior’s armour, and he exploited it to perfection.

A thundering combination saw Chudinov’s defences down, and Groves grabbed the opportunity with both hands, literally.
He rained down blows to the head, mixing rights and lefts with blistering uprcuts. Chudinov was out on his feet, barely able to throw anything back.
The only surprise was that the 29-year-old didn’t crumple to the floor. But the referee knew his time was up, jumped in, and a new world champion was crowned.
Devastating defeats to Carl Froch, who gave a wry smile at Groves’ coronation, and a contentious loss to Badou Jack left many wondering if he could ever overcome that hurdle.
But in front of thousands of fans at a football stadium in Sheffield, Saint George Groves ensured he had finally climbed that mountain.
And he dedicated his victory to his former opponent Eduard Gutknecht who was left fighting for his life with a bleed on the brain after their fight in December.
An emotional Groves said after the fight: “I’m dedicating this fight to my previous opponent Eddie who is still not well after our fight.
“When I was landing those big shots I wanted to turn to the ref and ask how many more do I need to hit him with.
“I’d like to dedicate this to him, he’s on my mind all the time. I hope he makes a recovery, me and my family pray for him everyday.”
