Starchitect – crushed only a neck in final month’s BetVictor Gold Cup – was heading for glory when he broke a hind leg approaching the second-last fence.

Starchitect sadly misplaced his life at Cheltenham

It left 9-1 northern-raider Guitar Pete – skilled in Cumbria by Nicky Richards – to battle previous favorite Clan Des Obeaux up the ultimate climb.

Tom Scudamore was near tears after Starchitect needed to be put down by racecourse vets.

He said: “He’d never felt better. I haven’t seen the replay and I’m not going to.

“It’s very sad for everyone – I just feel sad for the horse. He’s been knocking on the door so many times and today was possibly going to be his day. It wasn’t to be.”

It comes less than a year since Many Clouds lost his life when collapsing following the most gallant of victory’s at the same track in January.

The final result was a boost for northern jump racing – struggling to compete on the biggest stage with its southern rival. It was also the biggest win of 23-year-old jockey Ryan Day’s career.

Templegate’s treble

NAP 3.25 Chelmsford – Glenn Coco: ‘Improved since switching to the all-weather and there’s every chance he will go in again’ (add to your betslip)

He said: “He always hits a flat spot. Tom was getting away a little bit and I thought I was riding for a place. It’s a terrible thing that’s happened – we’re lucky to have won it.

“It’s a big thing for my career. You need winners on days like this to keep moving forward. I’ve had a good run recently.”
