HERE within the capital metropolis of worldwide superstar tradition, even the WBC heavyweight champion of the world has to beg for his slice of the pie.

Deontay Wilder stands 6ft 7in tall in his golden snakeskin sneakers and possesses a smile roughly 4ft extensive, in addition to probably the most explosive proper fist in world boxing.

His document reads 40 fights, 40 wins and 39 knockouts.

As he turns up on the Los Angeles Hearth Division to dish out free tickets for Saturday night time’s title struggle in opposition to Tyson Fury, Wilder exudes the charisma of a tv evangelist.

And but, as Fury himself is struggling to grasp, the Bronze Bomber from Alabama is sort of nameless in his personal homeland.

Fury mentioned: “I consider that extra folks would know me in Los Angeles than would know Deontay Wilder.

“It’s not that he’s carried out something fallacious. I simply don’t suppose the folks selling him are pushing him as a lot as champions earlier than have been.

“Everybody in America ought to know the heavyweight champion of the world. He’s charismatic, vibrant, he clothes good, he’s a knockout artist.

“Why is that this man not a celebrity on this nation? I don’t know.”

One reply may be that, regardless of having held the WBC belt for nearly 4 years, there are few victims of be aware on his document.

Another is that while British boxing is in boomtown territory, the American fight game struggles for airtime.

Wilder refers to himself as ‘the baddest man on the planet’ — but since Mike Tyson’s heyday Americans have stopped regarding the world heavyweight title with its age-old esteem.

As far as the locals are concerned, Wilder is not even close to being the biggest name competing at the Staples Center in Downtown Los Angeles this week.

That accolade goes to basketball legend LeBron James, newly arrived at the Lakers, who will play there tomorrow. Yet Saturday’s fight, Wilder’s first on pay-per-view, is a potential breakthrough.

Two unbeaten men, with a compelling clash of styles. One a world champion, the other what they are calling the ‘lineal champion’.

This means Fury is the man who beat the man (Wladimir Klitschko) who beat the man and so on, right back to the glory days when there was only one world heavyweight title.

But the Gypsy King is also the man who subsequently failed a drug test, plunged into depression and ballooned to over 28 stone.

The Fury who beat Klitschko in 2015 is respected in boxing, even more than Anthony Joshua.

Yet despite his remarkable weight loss, no one knows whether this current Fury is anything like the nimble-footed giant who dethroned Klitschko.

Not after two-and-a-half years out of the ring, followed by two comeback fights — one farcical, the other a bore.

Joshua’s promoter Eddie Hearn — perhaps sour that this contest has seen his own man temporarily eclipsed — describes Fury as ‘the most boring fighter in the world’.

And Wilder said: “There are a lot of things I don’t agree with Eddie about — I can’t stand that guy — but I will agree that Fury is a boring fighter.

“You’ve never seen in him in any exciting fights.

“The most exciting fight I’ve seen him in was when (Steve) Cunningham laid him down on his back.

“But come Saturday night, as long as he shows up, that’s all that is going to matter because I will do the rest.

“He is boring but I will make sure it is an exciting fight by bringing the excitement.”

It would be far too cynical to suggest Wilder and Fury were handing out tickets to firefighters merely because they cannot sell out the Staples Center — the fire service is particularly revered here after the deadly wildfires of recent months.

Yet the 21,000-capacity venue is likely to be nowhere near full.

The controversial Fury, little loved back home in England, hardly commands a travelling army of supporters to rival those who used to follow his fellow Mancunian and cornerman Ricky Hatton.

And it is often mentioned that Wilder’s southern roots have not helped his own celebrity — although a similar geography hardly hindered Muhammad Ali.

Wilder does, though, admit that Fury’s status makes this title defence a potential breakthrough for his own fame.

The 33-year-old said: “This is my moment in time.

“This is what I put all my time in for, this is what I make all the sacrifices for, sacrificing my body, sacrificing time with my kids, a lot of things that come with boxing and I’m finally here.

“I’m a playmaker. Although I come from a small place, I know how to shine in the big lights.

“I give people what they want to see and that’s knockouts.

“I do it in devastating fashion and come Saturday night, I plan on doing the same thing.”

Give them a Hollywood ending this time and they might finally be rolling out the red carpet for Deontay Wilder. Even here in Tinseltown.
