In line with a report by Malaysiakini, a man jumped out of the third floor of a budget hotel in Johor Bahru on Monday night (29 April 2019) in an attempt to escape the Jabatan Agama Islam Negeri Johor (JAINJ) during a khalwat raid conducted by the religious body in anticipation of Labour Day.
Halid Sono, the JAINJ Assistant Director of Syariah Enforcement commented that it was suspected that the man went out through the bathroom window of his budget hotel room and jumped out of the third floor by himself before running away and leaving his lover behind. Eh, I thought you jump, I jump? Clearly this guy never watched Titanic before…
It is unknown what happened to the man as it was undisclosed in the report. However, his lover was one of ten Johoreans that was detained by JAINJ during the khalwat raid operation conducted by the religious body at five separate budget hotels in Perling and Danga Bay, Johor Bahru. Carried out by a total of 19 JAINJ enforcement officers, all ten suspects are currently being detained for 24 hours until a relative bails them out.
All of those detained will be charged under Section 27(1) a and b of the state of Johor’s Syariah Criminal Offences Enactment 1997, which is punishable with a fine of up to RM3,000 or imprisonment up to two years or both if convicted.
