WikiLeaks creator Julian Assange was sentenced Wednesday to 50 weeks in prison for avoiding bail at London’s Southwark Crown Court.

Assange was detained last month at the Ecuadorian Embassy in the British capital after having his asylum withdrawn by Lenín Moreno the president of Ecuador. He’d been residing in the Embassy for practically 7 years after avoiding bail for worry he’d be extradited to Sweden on rape charges. Sweden dropped the charges while Assange was inside the embassy, however is now thinking about resuming the case. 

The WikiLeaks creator is likewise dealing with the possibility of extradition to the United States. The 47-year-old faces charges originating from his supposed function in what the United States Justice Department calls “one of the largest compromises of classified information in the history of the United States.” There will be a hearing on Thursday early morning at Westminster Magistrate’s Court on the extradition demand.

“Julian Assange’s sentence is as shocking as it is vindictive,” said WikiLeaks on Twitter. “We have grave concerns as to whether he will receive a fair extradition hearing in the UK.”

The sentence bied far to Assange in the UK is simply 2 weeks except the optimum he might have gotten. If condemned in the United States, Assange would deal with an optimal sentence of 5 years, according to the Justice Department.
