Mercedes out-foxed their rivals with their pit-stop strategy and the British ace was able to capitalise by holding of Vettel’s challenge to take the chequered flag.

It means Hamilton has cut Vettel’s lead at the top of the driver’s standings to just six points as the season develops in a straight fight between the pair for the title.

Vettel’s Ferrari teammate Kimi Raikkonen saw his hopes of winning the race ended by a first lap collision with Max Verstappen which saw both drivers forced to retire.

And Valtteri Bottas was unable to build on his win last time out as the engine on his Mercedes broke down with him racing a distant third.

Red Bull secured a much-needed place on the podium through Daniel Ricciardo with Sergio Perez coming home in fourth.
