LEWIS HAMILTON stormed to pole position for the United States Grand Prix after dominating in Texas.
The Brit, who celebrated with a shout of “yee-haw!” as he climbed from his cockpit, took pole ahead of championship rival Sebastian Vettel, who was second.
Hamilton can win the title on Sunday if he wins and Vettel is outside the top five and he produced a commanding performance in Austin for his 72nd pole of his career.
The 32-year-old has topped every practice session this week and all three qualifying sections, yet he was pushed to the wire by a last-ditch lap from Vettel.
After being quizzed about clinching the title in the US, Hamilton played down the suggestion he would win it here.
He said: “It is highly unlikely as Sebastian did a great job to get his car up here.
“All I can do is the best I can to make sure we get maximum points, but it is unlikely he will make a mistake because he is a four-time world champion.”
Vettel qualified ahead of Hamilton’s team-mate Valtteri Bottas, and added: “I struggled a bit but got it right on the last run.

“It was important to get on the front row because our race pace has been good all season, but credit to Lewis who put in two good laps.
“It would be good to win here but I go day by day. We are getting up to speed when it mattered, so it should be a good race day.”
