Hamilton storms to front of grid with thrilling qualifying lap ahead of Vettel who tops Mercedes front row shut-out
LEWIS HAMILTON took pole for the Spanish Grand Prix ahead of title rival Sebastian Vettel.
The Brit set a blistering lap at the first attempt while Vettel’s second flying lap was enough to bump Russian GP winner Valtteri Bottas down to third.
He said: “The first lap in Q3 felt good, but my final run not so good.
“But it’s good to come back from what happened last time out, we’ve worked hard and this is a good result.”
Meanwhile, McLaren’s Fernando Alonso was the shock result as he qualified in seventh place.
The Spaniard, who had a shocker on Friday when his car broke down after only one lap, went off to play tennis instead.
