Dutch midfielder was in tears after signing ‘wrong part of player registration form’ – leaving not enough time to fix the problem
MAIKEL KIEFTENBELD is a red-faced Blue after cocking up his signature to ruin a deadline-day switch from Birmingham to Derby.
The Dutch holding midfielder reportedly signed the wrong part of the player registration form as the window edged closer to shutting.
Sky Sports journalist Rob Dorsett says new papers were sent to the 27-year-old and then to the Football League – but the transfer deadline was missed by two minutes.
Dorsett tweeted that Kieftenbeld was “in Holland at the time and in tears” as the window shut because he blamed himself.
The Brum fans’ favourite is thought to have reached an agreement with their Championship rivals on deadline day over a £300,000 move.
And initially it was thought the deal’s failure was mainly due to the former Groningen star and his agent being in different places.
Angry Derby appealed in vain to the EFL after the move collapsed.
A statement from the Rams said: “We believe sufficient transfer documentation was completed before the 11pm deadline last Thursday and appropriate supplemental forms followed a short while later, due to the player and agent being in different locations.
“However following clarification from the EFL, their view is that the full criteria was not met for the transfer to be accepted.
“Given the circumstances, we reluctantly accept the EFL’s adjudication.”
Birmingham also insist they did everything right.
A Blues’ statement said: “Derby state that they believe sufficient transfer documentation was completed before the 11pm deadline last Thursday and appropriate supplemental forms followed a short while later, due to Kieftenbeld and agent being in different locations.
“However, the League’s view is that the full criteria was not met for the transfer to be accepted.
“From a Blues perspective, the Club did everything necessary in regard to processing the transfer within the required deadline.”
