The gopher tortoise is reportedly a threatened species in Florida. It is “recognized by its stumpy, elephantine hind ft and flattened, shovel-like forelimbs tailored for digging. The shell is rectangular and customarily tan, brown, or grey in coloration,” the FWC states on-line, including the species is “historical.”
“Their ancestors are a species of land tortoise that originated in western North America some 60 million years in the past,” the fee defined, including the species normally reaches a median of 9 to 11 inches in size.
