Rishi Sunak is a self confessed ‘coke addict’ – the drink, not the drug – and is a big fan in particular of Mexican Coca Cola.

Recent unearthed footage, said to be from the summer of 2019, shows the Chancellor having a conversation with two school boys about his love of coke.

All three parties see the funny side after he admits he’s a coke addict as Mr Sunak makes sure the teenagers know he is talking about the Coca Cola drinks brand and not cocaine.

He also talks about his love of ‘special coke’ from Mexico – but what is he referring to?

    What is Mexican coke?

Informally known as ‘Mexicoke’, it is produced in the South American country and then exported to the United States.

Mexican Coca-Cola has become popular in the United States due to its flavour, which is considered by many to differ from that of American Coke.

The Coca-Cola Company originally imported the Mexican-produced version into the US primarily to sell it to Mexican immigrants who grew up with that formula.

After first being sold at grocers to appeal to Latinos, Mexican coke’s popularity also grew among non-Latinos and larger chains like Costco took it mainstream after stocking it.

It is now readily available at most grocery stores throughout the United States.

In the UK, Coca Cola employ 3,600 people across England,
Scotland and Wales at manufacturing sites, offices and depots to produce the most common coke.

Mexican coke isn’t sold at major retailers in the UK but consumers can purchase bottles online at dedicated American candy stores such as American Fizz, as well as Amazon.

Why does Mexican coke taste different?

There are a few reasons why some people think Mexican coke tastes different but the main topic of discussion concerns the ingredients.

Mexican coke is made with cane sugar, while American coke is made with high fructose corn syrup.

There is a belief that cane sugar tastes more real and less like chemicals.

Unlike common coke sold in cans and plastic bottles, Mexican coke is packaged in a glass bottle.

Some suggest plastic and metal cans that American coke comes in can affect its taste, while glass bottles might help it to maintain a better flavour.

The ingredients for UK and Mexican coke are largely the same – so there should be little difference between the flavour.

According to the official Coca Cola website: ‘The basic ingredients and process used to make Coca-Cola are the same in all countries, although people perceive taste in very different ways.

‘It is possible for the same soft drink to vary slightly in taste due to other factors such as the temperature at which it is consumed, the foods with which it is consumed, or the conditions in which it is stored prior to consumption.’
