Dutchman pulled off a stunning comeback thanks to Peter Wright’s meltdown

The Dutchman faced an unexpected defeat against Scot Wright in the playoff final in front of a stunned 10,000-strong O2 Arena crowd.

Wright missed SIX match-winning darts which would have secured his second PDC major in three months.
Van Gerwen, 28, who now banks £250,000, said: “It was a crazy game. When he had darts to win it, I thought I was going to lose.
“Peter missed six darts – and don’t know how he did that! There was big pressure on his shoulders.
“Maybe the pressure was too much. But who cares? A win is a win as far as I am concerned.”
Wright, who beat the retiring Phil Taylor in the semis, produced hypnotising arrows in the early stages as he raced into a 5-1 and 7-2 lead.
Yet Van Gerwen benefited from Wright’s surprise bottle-job, clinching the victory on double four.
