Incident comes days after Nicky Hayden – also a former world champ – tragically died after crash

MOTO GP legend Valentino Rossi was hospitalised after a motocross accident in Italy yesterday.

The nine-time world champion was diagnosed with “mild thoracic and abdominal trauma”, according to Yamaha.

Rossi’s accident occurred during training in northern Italy, with the 38-year old escaping serious injury.

His team added: “No fractures have been detected in any part of the body and no serious traumatic pathologies were found.”

Rossi’s home Grand Prix at Mugello is the next round of the MotoGP season.

He had led the championship but crashed on the last lap – allowing team-mate Maverick Vinales to seal victory.


The Italian will hope to recover in time for the June 4 race so he can reclaim top spot.

His accident comes after Nicky Hayden‘s tragic death earlier this week.

Hayden famously pipped Rossi to the 2006 MotoGP title and was one of the sport’s most popular figures.

The American was placed on life support after being hit by a car during a training exercise in Italy last week.

Hospital officials confirmed the motorbike star, from Owensboro in Kentucky, died from his severe head and chest injuries.
