“I really feel the presence of my son, throughout, however he might not be there. I hear him discuss to me, mother or father me, information me, although he might not be there,” he wrote.

The 15-year-old fell from a cliff in Ovingdean Hole within the English seaside city of Brighton in 2015.

In his letter, Cave defined that Arthur visits Susie in her sleep, speaks to her and comforts her.

He described grief as a non-negotiable, horrible reminder of the depths of affection.

“It appears to me, that if we love, we grieve. That’s the deal. That’s the pact.

“Dread grief trails shiny phantoms in its wake. These spirits are concepts, primarily. They’re our surprised imaginations reawakening after the calamity.”

He says that like concepts, “spirits communicate of chance”, in addition to change, progress and redemption.

He explains that spirits are created by our imaginations, and implores his fan Cynthia to create and can these spirits alive to assist lead her out of darkness.

“We’re tiny, trembling clusters of atoms subsumed inside grief’s superior presence,” he wrote.

“It occupies the core of our being and extends by means of our fingers to the bounds of the universe. Inside that whirling gyre all method of madnesses exist; ghosts and spirits and dream visitations, and all the pieces else that we, in our anguish, will into existence.

“These are valuable presents which might be as legitimate and as actual as we’d like them to be. They’re the spirit guides that lead us out of the darkness.”

In September, Cave suffered one other loss when his bandmate 58-year-old pianist and keyboardist Conway Savage died from a mind tumour.

His 2016 album Skeleton Tree was touched by the consequences his son’s demise had on him, as did the documentary movie One Extra Time with Feeling, which documented the recording of the sixteenth studio album.
