A New York Metropolis police detective was shot and killed Tuesday evening whereas responding to a report of a gunpoint theft at a cellphone retailer, an official briefed on the matter informed The Related Press.

The official was not approved to talk publicly and spoke on situation of anonymity.

A police union, the Police Benevolent Affiliation, tweeted detective was killed and a sergeant was wounded within the taking pictures at a T-Cellular retailer within the Richmond Hill part of Queens. The sergeant’s wounds are usually not believed to be life threatening.

Police swarmed to the shop round 6:10 p.m. after a 911 caller standing exterior reported seeing the suspect take two staff to a again room at gunpoint, in response to dramatic dispatch audio. That was adopted a couple of minutes later by a barrage of pictures.

Arwindern Singh, who lives throughout the road from the shop, mentioned he heard about 20 pictures go off and thought they had been firecrackers.

Senate Minority Chief Chuck Schumer tweeted condolences.

“Could God bless them and their households.”

The final New York Metropolis police officer killed within the line of obligation was a 12-year veteran and mom of three who was gunned down in 2017 whereas sitting in a police car.
