World Surf League reveal promising youngster passed away riding a swell generated by the monster, Category Five winds
PROFESSIONAL surfer Zander Venezia, 16, has died while trying to ride a monster huge Hurricane Irma wave in Barbados, according to the World Surf League.
The sport’s governing body tragically announced the promising teenager fell off his board and hit a shallow reef at the “Box by Box” beach.
Venezia, a native of Barbados, was tackling the giant waves created by the Category Five Hurricane Irma when he suffered the fatal injury.
Emergency response performed CPR for over an hour but were unable to save the teenager, who was later pronounced dead in hospital.
A fellow surfer, Alan Burke, recounted the incident to magazine Surfline, saying: “Zander was bleeding, and he wasn’t moving.
“They tried to get him to the beach quickly, which was very difficult.
“Box by Box is a tough place to get in and out of, even if you have the ability.”
Venezia was a talented youngster with a bright future ahead of him.
