Newmarket, Cheltenham, Ripon, Lingfield and Taunton come under the spotlight as Templegate gives you his best bets for the day
1.50 NEWMARKET: Get RICH AND FAMOUS.
Mark Johnston’s speedster showed plenty of pace in maidens last summer. His length second to subsequent Group 3 scorer Best Solution on his debut is smart form and he wasn’t troubled to go one better on his next start.
It’s easy to forgive his York Listed flop as he got worked up before the race. He’s been gelded over the winter and could easily turn out to be better than a handicapper.
Victory Angel came good on his final start of the season last November. He has potential but might be held back by his temperament.
Castleacre will enjoy the return to six furlongs after pulling too hard in a Listed contest over slightly further in October.

2.25 NEWMARKET: Stick this on the Tab.
TABARRAK ran smart Thikriyaat to a neck over track and trip at this meeting 12 months ago before going on to land an Ascot handicap the following month. He’s not been seen since but must have a great chance if ready to go first time out.
Salateen is in great form. He found the step up to a mile just beyond him when third on Lingfield’s valuable Good Friday card last week. This trip suits him much better and previous wins at Wolverhampton and Meydan show he’s likely to go well again.
Castle Harbour has become disappointing and I’m not sure the drop to seven furlongs is the answer.
Last year’s winner Accession would prefer it softer.
2.40 CHELTENHAM: ANTARTICA DE THAIX looks a cut above.
She has rattled up a hat-trick of novice chase wins this year. Top weight is a fair anchor considering she is 21lb higher compared to her chase debut defeat in a Sandown handicap in December. But there’s little doubt she’s improved since then.
Magic Money is in good form. She followed up her Fontwell success at Haydock last week but the drop in distance from 2m6f might catch her out.

KING GEORGE SEVEN

3.00 NEWMARKET: BRANDO should take the starring role.
He’s won first time out in each of the last two years and he developed into a smart sprinter last season. His Sandown Group 3 success in July shows he is up to this level and he chased home top-class Mecca’s Angel in a Group 2 the following month.
Kevin Ryan’s ace went on to land the Ayr Gold Cup and he hit the frame in the Group 1 sprint at Ascot on Champions Day. He is by far the likeliest winner.
Windfast landed a Listed contest on his final start of last season. He’s unexposed over six furlongs have spent most of his career running over further.
Tasleet has possibilities but they will all have to go to stop Brando.
3.35 NEWMARKET: WAR DECREE should win the Craven Stakes battle.
Aidan O’Brien’s hope hasn’t been seen since landing the Vintage Stakes at Glorious Goodwood last summer. That length defeat of Thunder Snow is good form and he was strong at the finish so the step up to a mile should suit.
Rivet is nailed on to run a decent race. He also got the better of Thunder Snow – by a head in Doncaster’s Champagne Stakes – and he went on to win the Group 1 Racing Post Trophy.
His one below-par run came when fifth in the Dewhurst at today’s venue and it might be he is better suited to flat tracks.
Larchmont Lad doesn’t have to step up much to be a player and I wouldn’t be surprised to see maiden winner Eminent go well.
