Steve Mullen guides you through Thursday’s racing from Wetherby, Chelmsford and Towcester
LORD TOPPER was a winner during his brief career on the Flat and showed plenty of promise on his hurdling debut at Huntingdon 10 days ago. He stayed on strongly after a quiet start and should have learned plenty from the experience.
MISTER SPINGSPRONG goes back over hurdles at this lowly level after a modest chase run at Newcastle last time. He had earlier put in a couple of good runs, including when third at Catterick. This trip suits and he should be thereabouts on this drop in class.

LIGHTENING ROD has been knocking on the door, including when second here last time out. He has gone up 1lb in the ratings for that but his capable claimer takes 3lb off to counteract that. He’s gone well here before and should do again today.
GUITAR PETE was good enough to win a Grade 1 hurdle as a youngster and, while he’s clearly gone downhill since then, this isn’t the strongest race. He has moved across the Irish Sea to join Nicky Richards and that could reignite his old spark.
GLOBAL DREAM is a thorough stayer and was only getting going late on over 2m7f at Newbury last time out. He had earlier landed back-to-back wins at Leicester and, while he’s up the weights, he can be relied on to give his running.
FOR INSTANCE has shown promise on his two hurdles runs since winning a Warwick bumper way back in 2015. It’s a concern that he was off for 13 months before his comeback run at Southwell last time but he came through that and should win races this season.
PIKARNIA enjoyed the step up to 2m4f when winning well at Sedgefield last time and this further hike in distance should be right up his street. A 7lb penalty for that win shouldn’t be a problem with lots of improvement to come.
