BRANDY’S ON BRANDO

Steve Mullen guides you through Thursday’s racing from Newmarket, Cheltenham, Ripon, Lingfield and Taunton

THURSDAY’S ITV4 RACES

NEWMARKET 1.50

VICTORY ANGEL won his maiden at Doncaster in November in the manner of a horse better than an opening mark of 81. That race has worked out well so far and he could have put more daylight between himself and his rivals. That was over this 6f trip on decent ground so there’s everything going for him here.

QEYAADAH didn’t live up to his potential for Ed Dunlop last season and new trainer Michael Appleby could conjure quite a lot of improvement from his four-year-old. He had just a couple of runs last season after a promising juvenile campaign. He likes this trip and could end up rating a lot higher than 91.

CHELTENHAM 2.40

ANTARTICA DE THAIX landed a hat-trick of chase wins in good style at Wincanton last time and steps back into handicap company looking the one to beat. This 2m4f trip is right up her street as is the decent ground. She is still learning the chasing game and wouldn’t have to improve to account for these rivals.

NEWMARKET 3.00

BRANDO is a genuine Group 1 performer operating a couple of levels below that standard today so should have too much class. He finished last season going down by a length in the Champions Sprint at Ascot where he might have won with a better-timed run. This is his best distance and ground and he’s won around here before.

NEWMARKET 3.35

WAR DECREE looked destined for great things when winning the Vintage Stakes at Goodwood in July pretty much as he liked. It’s a worry that we haven’t seen him on the racecourse since then but he comes from the Aidan O’Brien yard so will be fit and ready to do himself justice. That blistering win was over 7f but this mile should suit as a three-year-old and we’ll see if he’s a live 2,000 Guineas contender here.
