Steve Mullen guides you through Thursday’s racing from Brighton, Haydock, Sandown, Newcastle, Yarmouth and Wolverhampton
PUNKAWALLAH did really well to win over course and distance last time because rider Richard Kingscote was shovelling the coal on right up the home straight.
But he kept delivering right to the line and a 2lb rise in the weights looks more than fair. The ground will be a little more testing here but he shapes like he’ll get a bit further so it’s not a problem.
2.20 – Mullen’s star bet
COOL SPIRIT should really have won on his debut at Beverley last time and would have done with a clear run.
He had to sit and suffer as his rivals quickened up and ran on strongly once in the clear. He had to settle for third but this longer trip should help on similar ground to last time.
TWILIGHT SPIRIT went close in similar company to this at Ripon last time where she enjoyed the give in the ground.
The handicapper has edged her up just 1lb despite that encouraging effort and Francis Norton keeps the ride, which is another plus.
DANISH DUKE won an apprentices’ race at Thirsk six days ago so gets in here without any penalty.
That race was over this distance on similar ground so there’s no reason why he won’t be right in the shake-up again.
SAINTED is taking a fair drop in class after finishing within three lengths of the winner in the Group 3 Oak Tree Stakes at Glorious Goodwood.
The ground was testing but not too deep that day so the six-day break should be okay.
This is her best trip as she underlined with convincing wins at York and Newmarket before that Goodwood effort.

FULL OF PROMISE should be forgiven her modest run at Beverley last time where she was hit by severe traffic problems.
She likes this ground and distance and is only 1lb higher than when beaten in a bobbing finish at Pontefract last month.
THE NEW PHAROAH has been given every chance of following up his Doncaster win with just a 2lb rise in the weights.
The official winning margin of that victory was only half a length but he looked to have a fair bit more in the tank if needed. This trip and ground are ideal and he should go close.
