The stays of the well-known Revolutionary Conflict frigate USS Bonhomme Richard have been found off the coast of the U.Okay., greater than 200 years after it sank following a naval battle.

The BBC studies that the well-known warship, which was commanded by John Paul Jones, was found by search consultants Merlin Burrows. Items of the ship have been discovered off the coastal city of Filey in Yorkshire.

Initially a service provider vessel named Duc de Duras, the ship was inbuilt France and donated to the American trigger by King Louis XVI in 1779. Renamed Bonhomme Richard to honor each international locations (American Ambassador to France Benjamin Franklin was the writer of “Poor Richard’s Almanac”), the ship was commanded by John Paul Jones, who’s considered the daddy of the U.S. Navy.

Bonhomme Richard famously defeated British frigate HMS Serapis within the Battle of Flamborough Head off the U.Okay. coast on Sept. 23, 1779. “Victorious, John Paul Jones commandeered Serapis and sailed her to Holland for repairs,” explains the U.S. Navy, on its web site. “This epic battle was the American Navy’s first-ever defeat of an English ship in English waters!” it provides.

The conflict can also be immortalized in a well-known quote from Jones. Throughout the closing phases of the battle, Bonhomme Richard’s mast was hit above the top-sail, sending a big part of the mast and the ship’s Colours crashing to the deck close to Jones’s ft. “Serapis referred to as out, ‘Have you ever struck your Colours?’ Resoundingly, John Paul Jones exclaimed, ‘Struck Sir? I’ve not but begun to battle!’,” in keeping with U.S. Navy. “With newfound will, his crew delivered decisive blows from all sides and aloft. Jones’ despatched 40 Marines and Sailors into the rigging with grenades and muskets.”

Regardless of defeating HMS Serapis, Bonhomme Richard suffered intensive injury through the battle and sank on Sept. 24, 1779.
