World No 2 will finish the Players Championship then head to Belfast on Monday in recurrence of injury
RORY McILROY requires an MRI scan on a back injury – meaning he could miss Europe’s biggest event.
The world No 2 will finish playing in this week’s Players Championship before flying to Dublin on Monday to see a doctor.
Newlywed McIlroy missed almost two months of action at the start of this year after picking up a rib stress fracture.
And while this latest setback is not thought to be as bad, it could mean he misses Europe’s flagship tournament.
McIlroy is down to compete in the BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth in two weeks’ time.
He won the event in 2014 but now may have to sit it out as part of the rehab process.
McIlroy said: “As long as I get myself right for US Open, that’s the most important thing.
“The pain feels more muscular than in the joints.
“I should be sponsored by Advil at this point!
“It’s OK, it’s manageable, it’s not 100 per cent but it’s good enough to get myself around.
“I’m going for an MRI scan on Monday just to make sure it’s not serious.
“It’s in the same area as what the injury was at the start of the year. If that injury was around an eight or nine in terms of pain and soreness and stiffness, this is around a four or five.”
