RORY MCILROY will miss next week’s BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth, and is in danger of being seriously “under-cooked” for the US Open three weeks later.

McIlroy’s latest injury blow came at last week’s Players’ Championship, when he suffered a recurrence of the rib muscle problem that kept him out of action for eight weeks at the beginning of the year.

The world No 2 played through the pain at Sawgrass where he finished tied for 35th on two overpar, and said he could probably have done the same thing at Wentworth.

But he has decided to take the week off to ensure a full recovery before he heads to Erin Hills in Wisconsin for the second Major of the year.

He is only due to play one more tournament before the US Open – the Memorial in Ohio – and after taking three weeks off to et married last month, that will be just his sixth start this year.


But McIlroy, 28, clearly thinks it is a risk he has to take.

He said: “Having had a reaction to my earlier rib injury, I have been advised to take a conservative approach to my recovery.

“That unfortunately means I have to withdraw from the BMW PGA Championship.

“It’s a disappointing decision to have to make, but I have to ensure I make a full recovery. I will now continue the process of preparing my game for the US Open and the rest of the season.”
