In this week’s US sport column, Russell Westbrook made history in his MVP quest, Tony Romo was a Dallas Maverick for a day, and the NFL schedule release is getting closer
SunSport’s Sunni Upal rounds up the best and worst from the past week in American sport.
This week, it’s the NBA MVP race, Tony Romo’s change of sport, and the NFL schedule.
RUSSELL WESTBROOK has had the best regular-season in NBA history – that is a fact.
His 42nd triple double against Denver at the weekend took him past Oscar Robertson’s mark of 41 set in the 1961-62 season.
Westbrook’s historic season with the Oklahoma City Thunder point guard has made him the front runner in the Most Valuable Player race.
The fact the Thunder have a winning record and have made the play-offs as the sixth seed is almost entirely down to him.
James Harden has had a brilliant season in Houston too, and he’s still in the mix for the award.
An interesting twist will see the former team-mates go head to head in the first round of the play-offs when Houston Rockets take on Oklahoma City Thunder.

With the way the NBA regular-season has panned out this year with players resting and teams tanking, the MVP award could simply come down to who has the better play-off series.
The MVP will not be announced until the end of June at a new awards show.
Westbrook has lit up the regular-season with his quest for history, his feud with Kevin Durant and everybody else at the Warriors, but his efforts could be overshadowed if Harden wins the first-round battle.
Tony Romo was a Dallas Maverick for a day.
The former Dallas Cowboys quarterback suited up for the NBA team and hit the hardwood with them on Tuesday night during warm-ups.
There’s a fine line between a bit of fun and farce – but I think it was the first of the two.
Romo might never have got that fan appreciation moment with the Cowboys. He deserved his moment in the spotlight.
QUOTE OF THE WEEK
“Angela and I have to talk but maybe it’s a possibility. This one is a little bit too big. It would be nice, but I don’t know.”
Sergio Garcia on wearing the green jacket he won for his Masters victory at his wedding
Super Bowl rematch
The NFL schedule is expected to be released next week.
The league must make a New England Patriots vs Atlanta Falcons Super Bowl rematch the opening game of the season.
Looking at the list of home opponents for the Patriots this season, there is very little to whet the appetite – apart from a Falcons rematch.
How about also another playoff rematch in week one – Dallas Cowboys vs Green Bay Packers in prime time on Sunday night?
Does this picture prove Philippe Coutinho is leaving Liverpool and heading to the USA in the summer?
No it doesn’t actually. The Brazilian is more than gifted enough with his feet and isn’t turning his attention to an NFL career any time soon.
Coutinho and Georginio Wijnaldum practiced their quarterback skills when visited at Liverpool’s academy by Washington’s Kirk Cousins and Miami’s Jarvis Landry during their NFL UK tour this week.
