Alexey Makarenko, 42, was captivating an audience of moms and dads and kids at the 1,200- seat Sochi State Circus when 2 male lions switched on each other.

He actioned in to stop the brawl however a 3rd lion jumped on him from behind prior to dragging him to the ground and whipping him inside the caged arena.

His other half Olga Borisova, 43, hurried over with a whip to frighten the monster as personnel entered into emergency situation mode, raising the lights, shooting water cannon and detonating sound grenades.

Mr Makarenko tossed a phase prop at the leaving animal as it was hustled off phase and took a bow along with his other half, leaving some in the audience questioning whether it was all part of the act.

But the lion had ‘clawed and sank its teeth’ into him, leaving him with gashes and deep bite marks on his shoulders and back.

‘As I tell my students, fighting lions are likely to unite and take part in the conflict,’ stated Mr Makarenko’s associate, Edgard Zapashny of the Great Moscow State Circus.

‘We must pay tribute to Alexei’ s other half, fitness instructor Olga Borisova, who responded in time and conserved her partner’s life.

‘Now Alexei is receiving medical care, but he will be back soon in the ring of the Sochi Circus with his handsome lions.’
