Brit Formula E star believes all the ingredients are there for his team to hit top gear in Formula E
SAM BIRD suffered further frustration in the Monaco E Prix this weekend but believes his fastest lap award shows the promise of DS Virgin Racing.
The British driver finished outside the top ten to miss out on the points in Monte Carlo on Saturday after a collision with a barrier forced him into the pits for repairs.
Bird told SunSport: “It’s a massive disappointment.

“I had a good start but the rear tyres overheated very quickly and I was sliding around.
“And when you are sliding around in Monaco those things can happen.”
That result leaves Bird fifth in the drivers’ championship standings, 70 points behind the leader Sebastien Buemi.
However, one bright point from the afternoon came when he won what could be a vital point after winning the fastest lap prize with an incredible time of 53.822 seconds.

And although he admits top spot is out of his reach, the 30-year-old still harbours hopes of finishing among the frontrunners, and believes better times are just around the corner.
He added: “Look, we are quick. We wouldn’t be getting these awards if we weren’t quick.
“The pace is there, we just need to understand our racing car a little bit more.
“That’s all we could do once we had the damage in the first car was try to achieve the point for the fastest lap.
“My engineer was keeping me updated with what to do and where I was with everyone in regards to the fastest lap. Thankfully I managed to get it.
“We are too far back but I will do my best to regain ground and try and fight for the top three.”
DS Virgin Racing will be hoping for better luck next week when round six of the championship takes place in Paris next Saturday.
