Mexican destroyer believes Saturday night’s world middleweight title showdown will go down as one of the greatest boxing matches of all time
CANELO ALVAREZ is ready to go to war with Gennady Golovkin and deliver a fight for the ages.
The Mexican destroyer believes Saturday night’s world middleweight title showdown will go down as one of the greatest boxing matches of all time.
The Las Vegas rivals are both fascinated by footage of the epic battles of the 1980s between ring giants Marvin Hagler, Sugar Ray Leonard, Thomas Hearns and Roberto Duran.
And Alvarez, 27, predicts that his clash with the unbeaten Triple G will be every bit as brutal as Hagler’s legendary victory over Hearns back in 1985.
That fight might have lasted less than three rounds before Hearns was carried from the ring at Caesars Palace after having his brains scrambled by Hagler.
But those brutal eight minutes of action contained more murderous punches than many pro boxers throw in an entire career.
Thirty-two years on, the fight they dubbed ‘The War’ is still regarded as the benchmark for the sport.
Now Alvarez is steeling himself for the toughest test of his career against a rival who has knocked out all but four of his 37 professional opponents.

Alvarez said: “We are in a different era to Hagler and Hearns but we have all the ingredients to make this a great fight which will go down in history.
“That’s what I’m hoping for. There’s going to be a lot of punishment on both sides.
“His style is an aggressive fighter who comes forward to knock his opponent out.
“I’m a counter-puncher who will be right there in his face.
“With our two styles, it has the making of a great fight.
“It’s the fight the people wanted.”
Golovkin has never taken a count during an 11-year career.
But Alvarez said: “He has many vulnerabilities, you just have to know to find them and attack them.
“You will all see that on Saturday night. I’ve always believed that I am going to beat him.” Golovkin, 35, cannot wait to prove his younger opponent wrong at the T-Mobile Arena.
He said: “It’s the perfect fight for the spectators. This is huge.
“I’m a big boxing fan. I remember the fights with Hagler, Leonard and Hearns.
“I was small, watching the TV and thinking ‘wow’. Right now, this is the same situation. I think this is a war.
Hagler vs Hearns: Round by round
ROUND ONE: Hagler signals his intent with a huge right hook as soon as the bell goes. He rocks Hearns.
But Hearns fights fire with fire and the pair trade rapid blows.
ROUND TWO: Hagler has his rival staggering again after a thundering punch.
Hearns keeps his feet — just — and survives to the bell despite a pounding on the ropes.
ROUND THREE: Again it’s Hagler on the front foot but Hearns keeps his left jab going.
Nasty right hook from Hagler spins the ‘Hitman’. Then a right-left combo floors him.
Hearns gets up before the count hits ten but ref stops fight.
“Canelo has destroyed everybody he fought in the last couple of years.
“He’s looked very good and this is a real fight, not a fake.
“It’s a big deal for me because I want a big fight.
“Canelo is maybe the face of boxing at the moment. Many people say he’s younger so he wins. But maybe not.”
Even Alvarez’s promoter Oscar De La Hoya believes we are all about to see something special.
He said: “Canelo and Triple G need each other to secure their legacy
“It will be talked about for years to come, like Hearns and Hagler.”
