Boss Jose Mourinho is confident that Argentina No 1 Romero can fill De Gea’s sizeable gloves on a permanent basis after a good season
SERGIO ROMERO is set to step up to be Manchester United’s number one next season – should David De Gea move to Real Madrid.
The Argentine international has impressed manager Jose Mourinho this season as a more than able deputy to De Gea – so much so that he is set to earn a new contract in the coming weeks.
Now with De Gea edging towards a move to Real Madrid the boss has confidence that Romero can fill his gloves.

Romero, 30, has next season plus the option for a further year on his current contract.
But that will be turned into a new three-year deal if he becomes the official number one.
De Gea is the subject of a potential £60million move to The Bernabeu although Mourinho will battle to keep him.
As revealed in SunSport he has already spoken to De Gea and told him that he will have talks with him about his future once the Europa League Final is out the way.
But Romero has already solved a problem about De Gea’s successor should all attempts to keep the Spaniard fail.
He saved a penalty in United’s goalless draw at Southampton on Wednesday night, his 11th clean sheet in 17 games this season as he second guessed Manolo Gabbiadini.
Romero said: “I played one year with Gabbiadini in Sampdoria in Italy and a lot of training.
“Maybe I have a decision in my head when he took the ball and I say he is shooting in the right and I go there and it is very good for the group and also for me”
Romero has already been told he is playing in next Wednesday’s final having started 11 of United’s 14 Europa League ties on the way to the Stockholm showdown with Ajax.
Romero said: “For me, the final is very important. I arrived here in the last year, free, nobody knew me.
“And now with the confidence that Jose gives me, the confidence the players give me and the confidence I have, this is very important and I will try and do my best for for the team.
“The final will be special for the year, for the club. The most important is the club and the fans and we will go there in Stockholm to win.”
He will certainly have the faith of his temmates to keep a clean sheet in that final with Ajax.
Team-mate Phil Jones said: “Whenever he has played this season, whenever he has been called upon he has been brilliant and he showed that again against Southampton and hopefully he can continue that for a long time at Manchester United.”
Romero joined United on a free transfer from Sampdoria in the summer of 2015 after his contract ran out with the Italian club.
De Gea could have now played his last game for United with Mourinho set to put a third team out on Sunday for their final league game against Crystal Palace.
He has already said he will give 20-year-old Joel Castro his first start for the club in goal as he saves both his goalkeepers for Wednesday’s Europa League Final.
