Initial reports suggest the incident occurred after about 25 minutes – and Casty was sent to hospital after the contest was abandoned.

The referee is reportedly considering himself lucky that his jaw was not broken and it is not clear if French police have been contacted over the assault.

French Rugby League president Marc Palanques condemned the violence.

He said: “I hope that the National Disciplinary Commission, which will meet on Wednesday, will be uncompromising.”

Saint-Esteve’s club president has offered to resign over the incident.
