Now in its 139th year, the White House Easter Egg roll is an annual day of family fun and the rolling of eggs, organised by the US First Lady.

Under Michelle Obama, the event brought 35,000 visitors to the White House each year, including Beyonce, Reese Witherspoon, and the casts of Glee and Sesame Street.

President Trump upstaged by Easter Bunny

The Trump White House hosted 21,000 people at its first Easter Egg Roll on Monday, but Twitter users were more interested in the President’s furry companion.

But at Melania Trump’s affair, the White House’s South Lawn was decidedly less star-studded. Of the 21,000 attendees the biggest name present, besides the Trumps, was probably the Easter Bunny himself.

Luckily Mr Bunny did his fair share of event promotion, sending Twitter abuzz as people tried to find exactly the right words to caption the resulting shots of Donald and Melania Trump standing next to a giant, bespectacled rabbit with a permanently perplexed expression.

With US Vice President Mike Pence and his family in South Korea, the day featured appearances from some other members of Trump’s administration.

Sean Spicer put his communications skills to work at storytime at the “reading nook”.

Although he wore a bunny suit when he attended the event as an aide of George W. Bush’s administration in 2007 (really: Melissa McCarthy even parodied it in last weekend’s episode of Saturday Night Live), this time Spicer dressed down in a tie covered in bunnies to read How to Catch the Easter Bunny by Australian author Adam Wallace to gathered children.

“I’ve been working long and hard with all my peeps and crew: we’ve made the eggs and now I’m here to bring them to you,” Trump’s press secretary read aloud.

Needless to say the resulting pictures of Spicer, often derided for his press conference gaffes, finally having an audience who will believe what he tells them were ripe for the meme-ing.

First Lady Melania Trump joined Spicer on the reading roster. She read Party Animals by US entertainer Kathie Lee Gifford, remarking that the book, “shows that we are all different, but we are all the same”.

Attorney General Jeff Sessions and White House Counsellor Kellyanne Conway also read.

Although Barack Obama read at the Egg Rolls hosted by his wife (two years ago his reading of Where the Wild Things Are descended into hilarious mayhem as he tried to calm children down after they were startled by a passing bee), Donald Trump did not sit down for storytime.

He did, however, give a speech before blowing the whistle to start the main event: the egg roll.

“We will be stronger and bigger and better as a nation than ever before, and we are right on track,” Trump said as he prepared to start the race, which sees eggs rolled across the grass with a wooden spoon. “I’ve seen those kids, and they’re highly, highly competitive.”
