Despite Spurs eduring a tough weekend of their own, the moment was a satisfying one for the Belgian defender.

At full-time of Arsenal’s game, Vertonghen simply tweeted: “I’ll take that.”

The tweet was quickly liked and retweeted by eager Tottenham supporters, revelling in their rivals’ struggles.

One joked in response “Can’t wait to lose 6-0 on Sunday and get into Champions League by a +1 goal difference.”

Unai Emery’s side must now rely on winning the Europa League to confirm their place in next season’s Champions League.

The battle to finish inside the top-four has been mired in top sides dropping points they wouldn’t usually drop.

Spurs’ loss at Bournemouth meant they have only won one of their last four in the league, a record still bettering Arsenal and Manchester United.

That pair saw their top-four hopes fizzle out with disappointing draws on Sunday, Chelsea booking their place in Europe’s top competition by beating Watford 3-0.
